South of France details

Here's what I had planned for the South of France. Originally I was going to spend one day each in Nice and Monte Carlo, but I took an extra day in Rome and ended up combining the two cities into one day. We get into Nice late on Friday night, then Saturday we start out in Nice and spend the afternoon and evening in Monte Carlo, coming back to Nice for the night. Then Sunday we get to Aix-en-Provence and rent a car to drive around the Provence area for 2 days, the first night in Avignon and the second in Aix. Because we have a car, we have the luxury of going wherever and whenever, not depending on the train or bus schedules for once, and so I've got a list of places that we'll pick and choose from over the two days.



Fri Nov 11 (Day 56) Pisa, Genova, travel to Nice

• 2225 Arrive Nice Ville (spend the night in Nice)

Sat Nov 12 (Day 57) Nice, Monte Carlo

• Nice: Chagall Museum, Old Town, Place Masséna, Cours Saleya flower market, beach, strolling around the Quai des Etas Unis
• Monte Carlo: Azur Express tourist train (if open), Les Grands Appartements du Palais (if open), Casino 

Sun Nov 13 (Day 58) Provence

I know there won't be enough time for all of these towns, but here's a list of potential candidates. We've got a hotel room in Avignon, so we'll get the car in Aix and drive to Avignon, drop the stuff off at the hotel and go drive, then come back to Avignon for the night.

• 0725-1022 TGV 6854 from Nice Ville to Aix-en-Provence TGV, then pick up rental car

• Uzes
• Gordes
• St Remy
• Les Baux
• Arles
• Roussillon

• Salon de Provence
• Apt
• Aix-en-Provence (return the rental car and spend the night)

Mon Nov 14 (Day 59) Provence

We'll visit some of the places leftover from the list of what we didn't do yesterday. We'll leave our stuff at the hotel in Avignon for a while until we need to start heading east, then grab our bags and go to the hotel in Aix.


Tues Nov 15 (Day 60) Barcelona

• 0758 Train leaves for Barcelona (my dad leaves a bit later for the Marseilles airport to come home)
